Traffic Lights at Dwenase and Asawinso: A Community-Focused Initiative to Improve Road Safety
The installation of traffic lights at Dwenase and Sefwi Asawinso is a personally sponsored initiative by Hon. Kofi Benteh Afful, MP for Sefwi Wiawso, in response to road safety concerns and recommendations from the MTTD. The project aims to improve traffic management, protect pedestrians and motorists, and promote safer roads across the constituency.
The ongoing installation of traffic lights at Dwenase in Sefwi Wiawso and Sefwi Asawinso represents a practical step towards improving road safety, strengthening traffic management, and creating safer road environments for residents and other road users across the constituency.
The initiative is being personally sponsored by Hon. Kofi Benteh Afful, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso Constituency, following concerns and recommendations raised by the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) regarding road safety and traffic control at the two locations. Recognising the importance of these professional recommendations, the MP took the initiative to facilitate the procurement of the traffic lights from China for installation at both locations.
The project reflects a commitment to responding to identified community needs through practical interventions. While government institutions and the relevant authorities continue to play important roles in national and local infrastructure development, personal contributions can also complement these efforts in addressing specific challenges that affect the safety and well-being of residents. For clarity, this particular initiative is being personally sponsored by Hon. Kofi Benteh Afful and is not a government-funded project or an inherited project from the previous Member of Parliament. Its motivation is centred on addressing road safety concerns identified at these locations and supporting measures that can improve the daily experiences of road users.
Improving Safety for Motorists and Pedestrians
Traffic management is an important part of community safety, particularly at busy road junctions where vehicles, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, traders, schoolchildren, and other road users interact. Inadequate traffic control can create risks and make movement difficult, especially during periods of heavy traffic.
Once completed and operational, the traffic lights are expected to provide a more organised system for managing vehicle movement at Dwenase and Sefwi Asawinso. They are intended to help regulate traffic flow, improve order at the affected locations, and support safer crossing for pedestrians. By improving the management of competing traffic movements, the installations may also help reduce the risk of road traffic accidents.
Beyond the physical infrastructure, the project highlights the importance of taking road safety concerns seriously and working with professional institutions whose observations and recommendations can help identify practical solutions. Effective road safety requires infrastructure, responsible driving, pedestrian awareness, and cooperation among the relevant authorities and the public.
A Practical Response to Community Needs
For Hon. Kofi Benteh Afful, public service involves more than representation; it also requires listening to concerns, recognising challenges, and supporting practical responses that can improve people's lives. The traffic light initiative demonstrates an approach that brings professional recommendations and personal commitment together in pursuit of a public safety objective.
The project also reinforces the importance of collaboration between community representatives, law enforcement agencies, local authorities, and residents in identifying and addressing infrastructure challenges. Sustainable improvements in road safety are most effective when the needs of road users are considered and the appropriate technical and operational measures are put in place.
Installation works are currently ongoing at both locations. The full benefits of the project will depend on the successful completion, commissioning, and proper operation of the traffic lights, alongside continued compliance with road safety regulations by motorists and pedestrians.
Building Safer Communities Together
The traffic light installations at Dwenase and Sefwi Asawinso are intended to serve a shared community interest: safer roads and more orderly movement for everyone. Whether travelling to work, attending school, conducting business, or moving between communities, residents deserve road environments where safety remains a priority.
As the work progresses, the focus remains on completing the installations and ensuring that they deliver their intended public safety benefits. Residents are encouraged to continue observing traffic regulations, exercising caution on the roads, and cooperating with the relevant authorities to promote responsible road use.
The development of Sefwi Wiawso requires practical solutions, shared responsibility, and a continued commitment to the well-being of its people. Through initiatives that respond to identified needs, the constituency can continue working towards safer communities, improved infrastructure, and a better environment for residents and future generations.
Safer roads are a shared responsibility, and every practical step towards protecting lives matters.
